“Playing with colors made me feel like a kid again. I also enjoyed the collaboration. Everyone was able to see what everyone else was doing and got to share how they got a particular visual/technique. Got some wonderful pieces that I hope to use in some of my future Bookbinding.”

“The beginning of the class was a bit slow, waiting for the late students to arrive, and then doing introductions. I would have preferred to get going at 5 minutes past, and then latecomers would have to catch up. I would like to have made more paper before the lunch break, and not feel as rushed towards the end of the class. It could also have given Pietro more time to do another demo.”

“I came on Sunday after Pietro had taught the paper marbling course on Saturday. I was the only new student and, frankly, wasn't really instructed at all. Don't get me wrong, Pietro is kind and welcoming but it soon became clear to me that everyone knew each other from the day before (we never exchanged names or other info about ourselves). And also, even more importantly to my thinking, everyone had taken this workshop with Pietro several times before. Why is that important? It seems to me that SFCB would benefit from bringing new people in and as this was billed as "Intro to fabric marbling", I was surprised to see folks in the class that were practically professionals who were selling, or preparing to sell, their fabric art.”

“We spent the first half of the day learning technique and getting started. The afternoon was dedicated to making our own work with Pietro's input. The day flew by! I was so inspired by Pietro and my classmates. We all had our own styles. Pietro always reminded us to be creative and not too stuck on how we think it should be. Art is surprising! I loved the colors and the patterns. I was in heaven. I work in a Special Collections library so the first thing I did when I got back to work was to look at our examples of marbled paper.”

“Pietro's internet connection was not very good, and the low image resolution made it difficult to see the marbled patterns at times. Anything Pietro can do to improve the quality of his connection, and or the subscribed connection speed of his connection provider, would be helpful. This could include moving his WiFi modem close to his laptop/phones/cameras, and even using a direct ethernet cable connection from his modem to the USB port of his laptop, and using the laptop as his overhead camera, if possible.”
“It would be really helpful if connectivity could be improved because the picture quality was really grainy despite having few students in the class taking up bandwidth.”
“I would have appreciated a short segment on "what to use" for draining, drying, pressing & storing marbled papers. Admission: I am not an artist. Maybe this is covered in Art 101?... “

“I can only say good things about Pietro and the class. He went out of his way (along with Sarah @ SFCB) to get me the kit ahead of time so I could take the class from Italy. “It could be in person 🌞 one thing missing in the online vs in person experience is the ability to see what others in the class are doing and to have the “in the moment” feedback on your own work or process or technique. That said, I think Pietro did a great job of addressing people’s questions and the issues that were arising. One suggestion: email the syllabus and also include on the syllabus the materials list from the website. There were too many places to go to have all the details for the class. Would definitely take another class and I’m looking forward to the advanced class.”

“I thought the last class was the best when he shared the diagrams of how to do the paint and the rake directions. It could be improved by showing us a thing and then letting us try it and then showing us another thing. Sometimes it got to be overwhelming when all of the different types were shown at the beginning of the class and then you have to remember to do them yourself in the practice parts.”

“I took an in person class from him a few years ago and then now this one. I enjoyed both. The only comment is that it is harder over zoom because he doesn’t have a chance to walk around and chat with each of us about what we’re doing but it still went very well.”
“I would not take this course online again. Because the instructor is not in person to see the issues we had with preparing new colors of paint, we had to test by trial and error. It would be really good if Pietro could prepare a summary and email it on how to prepare the paint if using the paints from Pro Chemical or Golden Fluid. I found the paints from Golden to be easier to use.”

“Would have been nice to have seen examples of marbling on various types and weights of paper.” Instead of showing all marbling techniques at once, it might be more useful for students to have a demo of one pattern at a time and then have teacher work individually with each student to make sure they have mastered that particular technique. With only 8 students, it would not take that long to have 4 or 5 patterns perfected over the course of the afternoon. Would have preferred additional mixing jars for black and white paints instead of the tiny watercolor mixing trays.
“Having a greater appreciation of the techniques of the art of marbling, it's a lot harder than I imagined. But Pietro’s knowledge and demonstrations showed that with practice something beautiful can be made. "Find your own way" is an excellent mantra!”

This was such a good workshop, I wish it was in two parts. “Pacing: I would restructure the class to allow all prep and some marbling by students to be completed before the lunch break. More drying time is needed. Materials: plastic is needed to transport wet papers home. Logistics: the floor in the clothesline area became very slippery. Floor covering is needed.”
“His sweet nature, his charming Italian accent, watching his demonstrations, and that we had freedom to try any styles we wished. I tried some traditional, but some much more modern approaches, and he seemed cool with that.”

“A bit chaotic as far as the area with the "clotheslines" where we hung our work to drip. VERY hard to reach all the lines, and we were getting very confused as to whose work was whose. Might all be handled easier with several Ikea type clothing drying racks (collapsible- easy to store!), so you could keep track whose work is on which rack. Also, the rods support the paper better than a thin string. It was VERY chaotic at the end one of class when we were trying to find our own work to take home. Just saying.”

“I would not take this course online again. Because the instructor is not in person to see the issues we had with preparing new colors of paint, we had to test by trial and error. It would be really good if Pietro could prepare a summary and email it on how to prepare the paint if using the paints from Pro Chemical or Golden Fluid. I found the paints from Golden to be easier to use.”
