Paper Marbling Lab

  • San Francisco Center for the Book 375 Rhode Island Street San Francisco, CA, 94103 United States (map)

Paper Marbling Lab is designed to give students more time to perfect the techniques learned in Introduction to Western Paper Marbling and to explore advanced patterns. Professional marbler Pietro Accardi will be on hand to coach students as they create personalized batches of decorative paper to take home.

The instructor will provide marbling trays; drying racks; papers from standard white to black, brown, and other colors; carrageenan; combs; and pigments including gold, silver, and other metallics. Students will be able to practice each step of marbling from prepping the water to creating patterns and applying them to papers, and will also have a chance to learn more advanced marbling patterns. This workshop is ideal for students looking to enhance their skills and also students without the space for a marbling set up at home.

Students who have taken Introduction to Fabric Marbling are also welcome in this workshop.

*Please note that marbling is a wet process and papers made in the workshop may not be dry at the end of class. Students may return to SFCB after the workshop to retrieve any papers left to dry at the end of the day.

Materials to Bring: None.

Optional: Students can bring their own paper but it must be primed and flattened at least 2-3 days before the workshop. Students wishing to bring their own paper should contact SFCB after registration for details. Students with fabric marbling knowledge may bring their own fabric to marble.
