Pietro Accardi’s introduction to the art of marbling workshop will provide you with an understanding of the history, styles, tools, and techniques of this classical European art form. The morning discussion will cover all the foundational elements of marbling practice: acquisition and proper use of the supplies including carrageenan, primer, paints, trays, rakes, combs, and more. During the discussion, you’ll also be engaged in the preparatory mixing of the water marbling medium using your own tray and assortment of tools. Pietro will then demonstrate how marbling is done, with helpful instruction on applying paints to the water medium and dealing with known and unknown variables. You’ll learn how to create classical and basic marbling patterns, as well as spontaneous designs, using a diverse array of rakes and combs. After a break for lunch, you will have ample time for your own practice and experimentation with personal guidance from Pietro and as much primed paper as you need. You can expect to finish with 15 to 25 marbled sheets you’ve made yourself. Any pieces that aren’t dry by the end of class can be held at Castle in the Air for pickup later.
